Red Cross Has 13 Emergency Shelters Open Throughout South Central New York

SOUTH CENTRAL NEW YORK REGION – Binghamton, September 7, 2011 —

Continuing heavy rains and flash flooding has increased the need for emergency shelters throughout the region as people evacuate their homes or become stranded in their vehicles as they try to make their way home after work. The latest shelter openings are:

Saint Luke’s Lutheran Church in Sidney
Central United Methodist Church – 17 Nanticoke Ave., Endicott
Apalachin Alliance Church – 293 Tobey Rd., Apalachin
Endwell Volunteer Fire Department, 3508 Country Club Rd., Endwell
Binghamton Events Center, Binghamton University, Vestal Parkway East, Binghamton
Port Crane Fire Department
Margaretville Advent Christian Church
Addison Tuscarora Elementary School
Greene Fire Department, 8 North Canal St., Greene
Johnson City High School, Reynolds Rd., Johnson City
Green Lawn Elementary School, Green Lawn Ave., Bainbridge
New Beginnings United Methodist Church, 300 E. Miller St., Elmira
Ulster Fire Department, 85 Rescue St., Ulster, PA

The heavy rainfall is expected to continue through the night and the Red Cross will continue working with county officials to open other emergency shelters when evacuations orders are given. Teresa Caver, interim director of the Southern Tier Chapter said, “Once again, the people of our community need our assistance. The Red Cross is committed to providing food, comfort and shelter to all those in need. It has been a double hit with Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. However, the Red Cross is in high response mode and will be here as long as we are needed.”

The Red Cross responds to 70,000 disasters every year throughout the United States, providing shelter, food and relief supplies to affected people. On average, the Red Cross spends $450 million annually on disaster relief throughout the U.S. and around the world. Major disasters that impact entire communities like Hurricane Irene and the current flooding, add to the total response cost. The Red Cross needs your help to continue its timely response to local, regional and national disasters. Please donate to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to ensure that no matter where and when disaster happens, the Red Cross will be there without delay. Visit www.redcross.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS; you can also text the word “REDCROSS” to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Contributions can also be sent to the Southern Tier American Red Cross Chapter, 620 E. Main St., Endicott, NY 13760.

There were 2. I stayed at the one at Abide and the Vine. It had over 300 at its peak. I beleive it was Sunday that it was moved and the people staying there transported to the new location in Candor. The Church right on #96. It was moved because of no electricity (and I guess the officals weren’t able to locate a generator large enough).

The Red Crossand the people of Owego have an aid station at the Presbyterian Church in Owego. It is open 9-7:30. There is food, water, ice, cleaning supplies, personal items, baby food, a few baby clothes and blankets, diapers, baby wipes, dog and cat food. Catholic Charities is giving out gift cards to Target and Walmart. The Episcopal chrch on Main street, just past Rite Aid has clothing. St. Patrick’s Catholic Church has water and ice. New Life West has food and supplies on Geoerge St. near the High Scholl. The Tioga Opportunities has hot food for lunch and supper. Royal Motors is giving out gift cards on 17c West, past the Price Chopper. They also have a mobile truck giving out food and supplies.
There are groups picking up items from the Presbyterian church for distribution to those who cannot get to the church.

The Owego shelter is in Candor because there was no power or gas in Owego, so they had to outside the village.
