A former Binghamton Police Captain has pled guilty to drunk driving. John Shea, has retired after pleading guilty to a reduced charge for his drunk driving arrest in March. Shea was sentenced today to a $500 fine and a 90-day suspension on his driver’s license. By pleading guilty, Shea reduced his DWI to Driving While Ability Impaired, a traffic infraction. As part of the plea agreement, the second charge of possession of an open alcoholic beverage in a vehicle was dropped. Shea told reporters that the Binghamton Police Department gave him the options of retiring or being fired in court. Shea had been arrested on March 18th after he hit a tree on Vestal Avenue with a city vehicle. He was off duty at the time.
