Tioga Downs has cleared another hurdle on the road to building a hotel adjacent to the race track and racino entertainment center in Nichols.
Officials got a variance from the Tioga County planning board for the hotel, which was needed because the Town of Nichols has an ordinance on buildings that exceed a certain height. Now Tioga Downs will make sure that the planned hotel is in compliance with D.E.C. and state regulations.
The hotel expansion currently hinges on New York State going forth with legalizing gaming, which is a two-year process that requires a constitutional amendment.
Legislators took the first step in that process this year. Developers are planning a seven-story, 132-room hotel. If everything goes as planned, groundbreaking on the new hotel is set for March of 2014 with an opening projected after 10-months of construction.
