The Village of Owego Board of Trustees has decided that the Mayor and Trustee salaries are worth more than a dollar after all. Monday night the Board voted to restore the salaries to their former levels: $5000 a year for mayor and $2400 annually for each of the Trustees. Last March, the Board reduced each of the positions to the dollar a year stipend. But Village elections were held later in March and new trustees were seated. At the Board meeting, Trustee Jim Legursky spoke out against the pay increase, claiming the Village is close to bankruptcy. But two of the Trustees who were newly elected in March, Phoebe Morris and Jenny Ceccherelli disagreed, and pointed out that the salaries have been factored into the budget every year. The pay for the Village Clerk, also reduced to a dollar in March, had been previously restored by the Board to its $30,000 a year level.

It is obvious that Ms. Morris & Ms. Ceccherelli do not view themselves as public servants. The Village needs to surrender its charter. Residents receive next to nothing in services; the Town of Owego provides the police support since previous Village officials decimated the police force. We pay high taxes with little to no return.
Take the money from the village clerks salary, way over paid anyway.
